Beinisvørð (Beinisvord) is a 470 meter high sea cliff in Suðuroy, Faroe Islands, the highest sea cliff in Suðuroy and the second highest in the Faroe Islands. It is located between the villages Lopra and Sumba. Beinisvørð has vertical cliffs in the directions which are towards the sea, it has a green slope down towards the village Sumba. The top of Beinisvørð is visible from many places in Suðuroy, one can see the triangle shaped top of Beinisvørð from Lopra, Nes and from Marknoyri, the easternmost part of Vágur. In clear weather it is also visible from Smyril M/F just before entering the fjord of Trongisvágur, Trongisvágsfjørður. Men from Sumba used to go down along the steep mountain side of Beinisvørð with a bird line (it is called "síging", one man is hanging in a very thick rope, while several men are holding the line) in order to catch some sea birds and to collect eggs. Both birds and their eggs were important food for the people in Sumba in the past. Several men have lost their lives because of an accident while they were hanging in the line, sometimes a stone fall down in their head and die of the injurie they got. In 1975 there was a tremendous avalanche in Beinisvørð, destroying numerous bird habitats and well known places.
Beinisvørð in Faroese Poetry
At least two of the most famous Faroese poets have mentioned Beinisvørð in some of their poems. One of them is Poul F. Joensen (born 1898 in Sumba, died 1970 in Froðba) has often mentioned Beinisvørð. A Faroese singer and composer from Klaksvík, Hanus G. Johansen, has made melody to several of these poems and after that they became very popular and well known amongst the Faroese people of all ages. Another Faroese poet who has mentioned Beinisvørð several times in his poems is Janus Djurhuus (born 1881 in Tórshavn, died 1948).
Tourism
Tourist who visit Suðuroy often wish to see Beinisvørð. It can be seen from several locations, the nearest is from Hesturin, near the road to Sumba. There is a one lane road between Lopra and Sumba which passes by Beinisvørð via Hesturin. There is also a road tunnel from Lopra to Sumba. For busses it is best to go to Sumba first and from there up to Hesturin (near the antenna), and on the way back turn the bus on Hesturin and go back to Sumba. The road from Hesturin to Lopra has many curves and can be difficult for busses to drive on. Another option is from Lopranseiði, which is west of the village Lopra, turn right just before entering the village, a road goes almost all the way to the coast. It is not far from the main road, less than one km. Beinisvørð can also be seen from a further distance from Eggjarnar, just south of Vágur. A one lane road goes all the way up to Eggjarnar all the way to the edge, the road stops only around 25 meters from the edge.
